The soundtrack to the documentary of the same name, 'Bij Wat Ook Moog' Gebeuren' (Come What May) follows three young footballers as they reach a defining point in their careers. Pressures and expectations fill up much of their lives, and they all take a toll on the psyche. Inner confidence and self-belief are always in the limelight, and both can stutter and flail under pressure; the only way to combat and defeat those demons is to keep on believing in yourself.

The soundtrack sweats out courage and a lively, nervous energy, but also speaks of the sacrifice required in driving towards a dream. The bravery of a roaring lion manifests in both the heart of the music and the heart of the footballer. It's about pursuing your dreams.

This release was first made available on digital formats in 2014, coinciding with the release of the documentary. Now, for the first time, Fluid Audio are proud to present 'Bij Wat Ook Moog' Gebeuren' as a physical release, falling under our Book Design Series.

Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek), Gareth Davis, and drummer Leo Fabriek bring these people to life with a bass clarinet, broken drum loops and evolving, modern electronics, telling the personal stories of young athletes caught up in the eye of the storm, namely the unrelenting glare of life under the microscope in the 21st Century. Local and national attention, rivalries, and social pressures are at war with the desire for self-improvement and eventual victory, both on the pitch and in their personal lives. The soundtrack rises and falls, lulls and spikes with optismistic interludes, troughs of self-doubt and hardship, and the grinding out of hours and hours spent in practice. The score never tires, though.

There are urban, almost industrial parts to the score as a ball is kicked around a makeshift concrete pitch. And like players in a team, these footballers all come from different backgrounds, with different paths and stories to tell...but they're also united in one dream, one passion, one goal. Free-floating jazzier segments give the music a playfulness, like a Rabona trick shot, and it’s important to keep things light and lifted, even when the heat is on.

Fame is another alluring prospect, especially to the young, but these footballers are in love with the game, keeping their eyes on the prize. And while natural talent is a gift, it still needs to be nurtured. Practice doesn't make perfect: perfect practice makes perfect. The soundtrack is thus imbued with a high work ethic and a strong desire to reach its goal.
